ในกาลก่อนพระภิกษุเมื่อออกบวชแล้ว ต่างก็มีวิธีในการแสวงธรรมต่างกันออกไป บ้างก็ศึกษาพระธรรมในพระอาราม บ้างก็ในป่าใหญ่ ดังเช่นภิกษุบวชใหม่รูปหนึ่งได้เลือกออกไปปฏิบัติธรรมในป่าแห่งหนึ่ง เมื่อเข้าฤดูแล้งป่าที่เคยชุ่มชื่นก็แห้งแล้งร้อนระอุ เมื่อกิ่งไม้ใบไม้เสียดสีกันมากๆ ก็เกิดเป็นเปลวไฟลุกไหม้ลามมาถึงบรรณศาลาของภิกษุ เมื่อไฟมอดลงบรรณศาลาของภิกษุก็เหลือแต่ซากเถ้าถ่าน ภิกษุจนปัญญาที่จะสร้างศาลาใหม่ได้ จึงออกจากป่าไปขอความช่วยเหลือจากชาวบ้าน
